Kanata Rep Rookie Wins London Scorpions Tournament

Updated Thursday August 3, 2017 by Kanata Baseball Association.

Over the past weekend the Kanata Cubs Rookie 1 (Carlson) team made the trek to London to participate in the twenty team Scorpions Summer Classic.  The team rolled through the three game round robin portion of the tournament with a perfect record outscoring their opponents 64-6 to earn the top seed for the quarter-finals that would be played on Sunday.

Sunday was a very hot and sunny day that had the schedule set up so that in order to go to the finals a team would have to play three games consecutively starting at 9 am. The Cubs came out on fire against a hard hitting Pickering team in the quarter finals and managed to end that game early after five innings with a lopsided 18-3 win. The semi-final game was against a Collingwood team that had not lost a single game to that point of the tournament and Collingwood was crushing the ball and put up six runs in the top half of the first inning. The big lead had the Collingwood kids singing on the bench which would act as a big motivation to the Cubs who would come storming back and win 13-8.

The Finals were against a very strong Peterborough team that arrived with plenty of swagger as they had only lost once all season. Due to other games at the complex the championship final was to be played where there were no covered dugouts but the Cubs parents stepped up their game and raised a sun tent and lined up all of their lawn chairs underneath it so the players would get some respite from the heat. The Cubs would be down 19-9 after three and a half innings but would once again come back and tie the game and force it to extra innings. In extras they held Peterborough off the board in the top half of the eighth and then won it on a two out walk off home run.

What an absolutely incredible weekend for a very special group of players and parents!
