Minor Midget Kanata Cubs Conquer in Cooperstown
Congratulations Midget CubsUpdated Wednesday July 25, 2018 by Kanata Baseball Association.
"The minor midget Cubs made a little trip south of the border to the Mecca of baseball in Cooperstown this past weekend.
The boys went 1-1 in the round robin losing 9-1 to the Gloucester city Brawlers and beating the Vermont Jays 3-2 after a complete game of 0 earned runs pitched by Lincoln Bishop sending them into the quarter finals.
They again faced off against the Vermont Jays for a place in the semis. Connor Finnie pitched an outstanding 5.1 innings giving up 2 runs. With the score 2-2 in the bottom of the 6th, slugger Neil Maclean hits a deep opposite bomb to right centre to put the Cubs up by 1. That sealed the deal as fireballer Sam Wilson racked up the save that sent them to the semi finals.
The Cubs had the toughest challenge yet as they faced the top seeded powerhouse Montreal Titans. However, the boys were ready and came to play. With the strong outing of Michael Patchell, the team combined for 11 hits to route the Titans 8-5. Great defence and timely hits allowed the Cubs to quiet the Montreal cheering section as they moved into the finals.
They faced a familiar foe as the rematch against New Jersey's Gloucester City was set to rumble. Although this time, a different story. Again, another strong pitching start as Colby Frost stifled he hitters with a nasty breaking pitch that kept the opponents off balance all day long. The Cubs went ahead 8-2 after 3 innings and it was smooth sailing from there. The boys took the outs when needed and played like a true championship team. With the Cubs leading 9-5 in the bottom 7th and runners on 1st and second, Wilson was called on to save the day. It took only 3 pitches as the opposing hitter hit a line drive to short resulting in a 6-4-3 triple play to win the tournament. The champions of the Cooperstown Backyard Classic was crowned and with that came the end of a fun filled weekend." - Head Coach Jesse Gratton
