  • Players hit from a pitching machine set at 45 mph
  • Basepaths are set at 65 feet (SS to 1B throws are over 80 feet)
  • No base-running restrictions (runners advance at their own peril)

Evaluation Process  Tryouts (Late March)
Season  Full (April to August)

What to Expect

Registration for Tryouts is currently closed.

Participants are strongly encouraged to also register for Spring Rookie House (opens in early January) as that program is likely to fill up prior to completion of the OBA Rookie Select Tryout process.  Players drafted to a OBA Rookie Select Team will have their House registration cancelled and funds applied to the OBA Rookie Select registration fees.

Tryouts are held March 16 to 31 with teams formed not later than April 9.  More information regarding tryouts can be found here.  Players cannot be placed on an OBA Rookie Select team without participation in the tryout.  Players not selected to a team will be informed via email by the convener.

Teams will participate in spring training in the Kanata Cubhouse during the month of April.

Outdoor practices begin in May after the city has released baseball fields.  Teams are expected to practice 2-3 times per week, with practices held Monday to Saturday.  NCOBA league games begin in late May and finish before the August long weekend.  Teams will play 16 league games in the NCOBA Rookie Select division, with most games scheduled Monday to Thursday.  At most 4 league games will be played outside of Kanata (Arnprior and Merrickville). NCOBA playoffs are typically held on the 2nd weekend of August.  The winner of the NCOBA division may advance to regional and or provincial playdowns.

All KBA teams will participate in the KBA Rookie Select tournament, typically held in June (more details soon).  Teams may optionally participate in regional Rookie Select tournaments or exhbition games.

At the discretion of the coaching staff, KBA will support the creation of a travel team comprised of the top players in this division.  This team will seek out additional playing opportunities (tournaments and exhibition play) throughout Ontario.  Players should expect to meet an additional 1-2 times per week for practice with the combine travel team. KBA will provide practice fields and equipment, but all travel costs and team wear will be the responsibility of the team.

What Else You Should Know

  • This is a competitive program for which a considerable commitment is required, players are expected to attend 85% of all team practices and games.  Participation in the KBA Rookie Tournament and NCOBA Playoffs (both held on weekends) is mandatory.
  • OBA programs have a strict requirement for coaching certifications, you can be sure that your coach is well vetted and has attended all mandatory clinics perscribed for this level.  Teams will have one head coach and at least two assistant coaches, but will require additional volunteers (team manager, scorekeeper, base coaches, and tournament representative).  Volunteers will be required to assist in all aspects of the KBA Rookie Tournament.
  • Players and parents are representing the Kanata Cubs during play with other associations.  Our code of conduct is enforced at all events (this includes player attire, parent behaviour, performance bonds, etc).  More details will be outlined by your coach at the first team meeting.
  • Ontario Baseball equipment requirements differ from Little League and House programs.  Inquire with the coach, convener, or James Moser before making any expensive purchases.
  • Teams are formed via draft process; friend or coach requests can be considered by the draft teams, but are not guaranteed.

If you have any questions or concerns about the OBA Rookie Select Program, please James Moser.
